Before you touch the surface with any product, find the grain. Hold a flashlight or your phone light at a shallow angle to the panel and look for the fine parallel lines. On most refrigerators and dishwashers, the grain runs horizontally. On range hoods and some ovens, it runs vertically. Some appliances have a brushed finish that switches direction between panels. Get this wrong and every wipe you make works against you. Spend ten seconds here before you start.
A dry microfiber wipe with the grain removes dust, crumbs, and loose grit before any moisture touches the surface. Skipping this step and going straight to a wet wipe drags abrasive particles across the steel, creating fine surface scratches over time that eventually dull the finish permanently. Abrasive scrubbers, steel wool, and any powder cleanser are completely off the table. A single pass with a green scrubbing pad leaves visible scratches in brushed stainless that are there permanently. The surface looks worse than a few fingerprints ever would.
Bleach-based products should also be avoided. They damage the chromium oxide layer that gives stainless steel its corrosion resistance. Once that layer is compromised, the steel is vulnerable to rust, which is irreversible without professional refinishing.
For grease buildup that goes beyond what a regular spray handles, diluted dish soap on a damp microfiber works well when followed immediately by a clean damp rinse cloth and a dry buff. The key is that the soap residue gets fully removed in the rinse pass. Any soap left on the surface will streak as it dries.

Most stainless steel maintenance is genuinely manageable as a DIY task if you have the right product and follow the grain direction consistently. There are a few situations where it crosses a line.
